Limestone Enhances Water Quality, a versatile natural rock, contributes to water treatment and quality improvement, supports various industries, and promotes the sustainability of environmental resources.
Limestone is one of the most important natural rocks that has played a pivotal role in the evolution of various industries throughout the ages.
This light white or grey rock is not merely a traditional building material; it possesses unique chemical and physical properties that make it an essential component in numerous industrial and environmental applications.
With increasing global attention towards improving the quality and sustainability of natural resources, Limestone has emerged as an effective option for water treatment, adjusting its pH level, and reducing impurities and pollutants.
In this article, we will review the most important roles Limestone plays across different fields, while highlighting the significant efforts made by Zohdy Minerals Egypt in this domain.
Limestone Enhances Water Quality
Limestone is a sedimentary rock primarily composed of Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3).
It typically forms in marine environments where organic and chemical materials are deposited, and it is considered one of the most widespread rocks on the Earth’s surface.
Its formation is aided by the accumulation of shells and skeletal structures of ancient marine organisms, in addition to chemical precipitates from aqueous solutions.
Thanks to its diverse properties and multiple uses, Limestone Enhances Water Quality is considered a crucial material in many industries and sectors, making it a valuable natural resource that contributes to supporting economic and environmental development.
Key Properties of Limestone
-
Chemical Composition: Limestone is mainly composed of Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) and may also contain small quantities of other minerals such as magnesium carbonate and iron carbonate.
-
Texture: The texture of Limestone ranges from fine to coarse, depending on the size of its constituent particles.
-
Color: Its color is typically white or grey, but it may vary to other colors such as yellow or brown based on the impurities present within it.
-
Reaction with Acids: Limestone reacts quickly with acids, making it an effective material for adjusting the pH level of soil and water.
The Role of Limestone in Improving and Treating Water Quality
-
pH Adjustment: Limestone, due to its Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) content, contributes to adjusting the pH level of water.
When Limestone is added to acidic water, the pH value rises to the natural level, which reduces pipe corrosion and makes the water more suitable for various uses. -
Removal of Heavy Metals: Limestone helps in the precipitation of heavy metals such as iron and manganese through chemical reactions that form insoluble compounds which settle at the bottom of basins, thereby contributing to the purification of water from hazardous pollutants.
-
Reducing Water Hardness: Limestone is used in water softening processes through ion exchange, where calcium and magnesium ions are replaced by sodium ions, reducing water hardness and facilitating its use in homes and industry.
-
Water Purification from Impurities: Limestone can be used as a filtering medium in water purification systems, where it traps suspended particles and impurities, improving the clarity and quality of the water.
-
Groundwater Treatment: Limestone is relied upon in treating groundwater that contains high levels of iron and manganese, as it aids in the precipitation of these elements and improves the water quality before consumption.
Stages of Limestone Mining
- ExtractionLimestone occurs in extended layers that may be covered by a layer of rock, clay, or sand.
The overburden layer is removed in two ways: either by blasting or mechanically, depending on its type and hardness. The extraction of Limestone then begins, initially through blasting, considering that Limestone has moderate hardness.
Extraction benches are then used based on the thickness of the ore layer.
Limestone blocks are rolled down and collected for transport to the crusher using lifting and loading equipment.
This is done when there are no accompanying impurities like sand or clay, or they are washed to remove these impurities from the surface of the raw material.Limestone Enhances Water Quality - CrushingThe blasted and washed raw blocks are transported to the crusher to break the raw material down into sizes less than 75 mm.
The crushed stones are then transferred to the factory to begin the process of treating the Limestone to obtain Calcium Carbonate powder. -
Manufacturing
-
In the factory, the crushed stones arriving from the surface mine are received and collected in designated storage areas in preparation for processing.
The crushed stones are transferred from the storage areas using lifting equipment and placed in the raw material
receiving funnel to be transported to the crusher via a vibrating feeder for the crushing and drying process. -
Both processes can occur simultaneously by passing hot air over the raw material in the crusher, or the raw material can be dried after crushing in a separate dryer.
This process yields granules with sizes of 25 mm, which are transported on conveyor elevators to the storage phase. -
Grinding is done using conveyor belts interspersed with sieves to get rid of impurities and accompanying sand,
and rotary mills interspersed with steel balls that fall due to rotation onto the raw material,
turning it into Calcium Carbonate powder of various sizes. Limestone Enhances Water Quality -
This powder is transferred to classifiers (designated collection silos for each separate size)
via air transport pipes or helical conveyor belts, which perform the separation process by air for extremely fine sizes.
Less fine sizes exit and pass through sieves to sort the required size, and the larger size is returned to the mill for re-grinding. -
In the final product collection silos for each separate size, the Calcium Carbonate powder is collected in its various sizes,
followed by the packaging and bagging process according to the required packaging type for consumption. -
The packaging of the Calcium Carbonate powder, after being filled in its different sizes, is done either in paper or plastic bags weighing 25 – 50 kg,
or packed in jumbo bags with a one-ton capacity, or directly loaded into transport trucks,
depending on the required type of use for the powder in the industry.
